On July 18, Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD (PBTISD) celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Discovery School staff daycare center. This is one of the last 2021 Bond projects to reach completion.
The PBTISD Discovery School was created in 2018 to address the lack of affordable childcare services in the Pecos area for staff. Since its inception, the Discovery School operated out of a Sunday School at a local church in Pecos for the last five years. In planning the 2021 Bond, the district took an opportunity to renovate an existing district facility to accommodate the need for a district-owned facility to become the home of the Discovery School.
In April 2023, the PBTISD Board of Trustees, after careful consideration and community feedback, approved renovations to establish the Discovery School in the former Pecos Kindergarten facility. The use of the kindergarten allowed the Discovery School to have expanded classroom spaces, two play areas, a cafeteria/kitchen space, and a gymnasium. Staff with children ages six weeks to 3 years are eligible to utilize the Discovery School.
“The Discovery School is a great benefit PBTISD is proud to provide for our staff with small children,” said Superintendent Brent Jaco. “Our littlest members of the PBTISD family will have an excellent facility and receive the best care in our new Discovery School.”
Shortly after passing the 2021 Bond, local taxing entities reached out to PBTISD about partnering and developing a daycare that would also support their staff. This collaborative effort is a testament to our community's commitment to providing quality childcare. We are deeply grateful for the partnership and are pleased to announce that the PBTISD Discovery School is now available to the Town of Pecos City, Reeves County, Reeves County Emergency Services District, and Reeves Regional Health Hospital employees.
The Discovery School will open its doors for operation to our families beginning July 22, 2024. We proudly announce that it will operate year-round, providing consistent and reliable childcare for our staff, ensuring they can focus on their work with peace of mind.
