text: board approves 2024-2025 academic calendar

On Feb. 20, at the regular School Board Meeting, the PBTISD Board of Trustees approved “Calendar C” for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. This decision comes after careful consideration and collaboration between the school board, administration, and school stakeholders like parents and staff. In recent years, PBTISD has administered a survey to parents and staff members to participate in selecting the academic calendar after calendar feedback from the District Education Improvement Committee (DEIC). This practice has proven vital in the selection process and aids the board in their decision-making. This year, stakeholders were presented with two calendars, Calendar B and Calendar C.

“Calendar C” introduces several innovative changes to promote better student attendance, maximize instructional time, and provide staff with professional support. Notably, the calendar includes the removal of several half-days throughout the academic year to only three half-days. Allowing for streamlining the schedule to enhance learning opportunities.

“The approval of Calendar C reflects our commitment to prioritizing student success and needs,” said Board President AlexAndrea Zamarripa. “By minimizing disruptions to the instructional calendar, we aim to create a more conducive learning environment for our students.”

"We believe that reducing the number of half-days will contribute to improved student attendance and engagement,” said Superintendent Brent Jaco. “It aligns with our goal of providing consistent, high-quality education while respecting the valuable time of our students, teachers, and families."

Key highlights of Calendar C for students during the 2024-2025 school year include:

  • First Day of School: August 14

  • Long Weekend in October: October 14 (Bad Weather Day) and October 15 (Staff Development Day)

  • Thanksgiving Break: November 25 to 29

  • Winter Break: December 19 (Half Day for Students) to January 8

  • Long Weekend in February: February 13 (Half Day for Students), February 14 (Staff Development Day), and February 17 (Bad Weather Day)

  • Long Weekend for Easter: April 18 (Good Friday Holiday) and April 21 (Bad Weather Day)

  • Last Day of School: May 22 (Half Day for Students)

PBTISD remains committed to fostering a supportive and enriching educational environment for all students, staff, and families. “Calendar C” represents a strategic step forward in achieving this mission.
